FedEx Breaks Ground on First Solar Facility Outside the U.S.

UPS Gets New U.S. Operations Chief

Jim Winestock, a 40-year UPS veteran will retire as senior vice president of U.S. operations in February.  Myron Gray, the current chief of regional operations in Canada and Latin America, will assume the post.

The post is one of 12 on the management committee.  Winestock was one of UPS’s top paid execs with 2007 total compensation of $1.37 million.

Both Winestock, 57, and Gray, 51, started as package handlers during college.

Gray’s job will be to keep everything running smoothly,” said a UPS spokesman. “This is where the rubber meets road. He’s not the chief salesman. He makes sure everything is running on time and as efficiently as possible.”

FexEx Delays New Hub, Drops Superbowl Ad

Continuing its cost cutting, FedEx said it will delay opening its new hub at Piedmont Triad International Airport until next fall and will start operations with fewer workers than initially projected.

FedEx had previously planned to open the $500 million facility – which serves the greater Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point area of North Carolina – in summer 2009.

It is the latest budget cutting news from the company that recently announced it will not advertise on the SuperBowl for the first time in 12 years. Read the rest of this entry »

FedEx and USPS Show Holiday Sprirt

FedEx’s Memphis pick up station, which is usually closed on Christmas, opened its doors and gave customers a chance to pick up last minute gift packages.  The station opened because bad weather in many parts of the country caused backlogs at some pick up sorting stations.

The station was filled with laughter as customers hurried in to pick up packages.  Gary Feder, who received a box of gourmet chocolates from his sister, was one of the most appreciative customers.  He shared his chocolates with pick up station workers.  “If you’re working today you deserve a treat,” said Feder.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Postal Service was making special deliveries throughout Christmas Day.

UPS Partners With PGA European Tour

UPS has signed a four-year deal with the PGA European Tour, making it the tour’s official express carrier and giving it exposure in 53 tournaments in five continents, according to GolfWeek Magazine

UPS will have signs lining the golf course and entertain clients at tournaments worldwide, including China, England, Scotland and Germany.  Financial details weren’t disclosed, but baseline official sponsorships for the PGA European Tour run about $630,000 a year.

UPS Tested Air Traffic Control Satellite To Be Deployed
